Poster Winners

At its May meeting, the School Board recognized Shelby Fiddler of Grandin Court Elementary and Couron Crockett of RAMS for winning the Fair Housing Poster Contest.
School nurses recognized

The School Board also honored our school nurses. May 8 was School Nurses Day in Virginia.
Addison band honored

The School Board recognized Lucy Addison Middle School's Band for the outstanding performance at Music in the Parks in Atlanta, Georgia.

Welcome to the 2012-2013 School Year,

As we begin the school year, it is a good time to reflect on the eight core beliefs that guide all that we do in Roanoke City Public Schools.

1. Our diversity is a source of strength.
2. Our schools must be safe.
3. All students are capable of meeting high expectations.
4. We are accountable for our students' success.
5. Every individual in our Division contributes to our students' success.
6. We have a responsibility to work collaboratively with our families.
7. Respect, trust, and honest communication are the foundation of
successful and productive relationships.
8. The vitality of our community depends on a strong school system.

I hope you will embrace these ideas as we begin a new school year.

Exciting programs are in all of our schools. We always seek to capture both the hearts and minds of our students. Please become acquainted with your student's teacher(s) and the programs available at your child's school.

Many people have worked long hours to prepare our buildings and grounds; we all believe that our students deserve the best learning environments. All of us are proud of our academic accomplishments. We are fortunate to have a strong, dedicated School Board with a single agenda Do Our Best For All Students.

We will be stronger in all areas if we can count on your support. Please join the PTA and consider volunteering. You are needed on "Team" RCPS.

Notes from Superintendent

Instructional Time

Roanoke City Public Schools is committed to providing excellent instruction for our students. The current school schedules ensure the Division is in compliance with Section 22.1-98 of the Code of Virginia, which requires that school divisions provide 180 instructional days or 990 instructional hours per school year. Days or hours that exceed the 180 day or 990 hour requirement permit the Division to use the time to offset days missed due to inclement weather or other emergencies.

Strategic Plan

The 2009-2014 Strategic Plan is based on the continued philosophy that all students can achieve academic success. Roanoke City Public Schools is committed to its beliefs and will strive to meet and exceed the expectations laid out in our Strategic Focus Areas. Our journey will not end until all students achieve at high levels.

The current plan was prepared by a Strategic Planning Committee consisting of Board members and a combined team of students, parents, teachers, support and professional staff members, administrators, community leaders, and community of faith representatives. Before the final plan was approved, a draft copy was made available to staff, Board members, and student, parent, and community representatives. This plan was facilitated under the direction and guidance of E4 Exchange, Inc. Based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, E4 Exchange is a consulting and management firm that specializes in strategic planning and organizational development, serving clients regionally and nationally. Each year at least one report will be made to the School Board, students, parents, teachers, support and professional staff members, administrators, community leaders, and community of faith representatives on the Division's progress in meeting all areas of this Strategic Plan.
